Day 1:Wed. HALIFAX. Enjoy time at leisure to relax or to do some independent exploring. Your Tour Director is on hand this evening to answer any questions.
Day 2:Thu. HALIFAX. Your tour with a local expert focuses on the major sights: CITADEL HILL with its early 19th-century star-shaped fort; the tree-shaded walks; beautiful residential neighborhoods; and the harbor area, which shows the port’s military heritage. See the Fairlawn Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 100 people who perished on the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic. The afternoon is free, so why not head to the Halifax waterfront, where you can visit Alexander Keith’s brewery, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and a myriad of traditional pubs that serve up local ales and Gaelic tunes. Be sure to sample some traditional dishes, like Lunenburg pudding, Acadian rappie pie, or planked salmon.
Day 3:Fri. HALIFAX–BADDECK. Early morning departure for rugged Cape Breton Island. Arrive in Baddeck, the summer home of Alexander Graham Bell. Visit the ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL MUSEUM. Trace the achievements of the great inventor, who spent his last years on Cape Breton.
Day 4:Sat. BADDECK. THE CABOT TRAIL. This morning, drive along the famous Cabot Trail, an area first explored by John Cabot just five years after Columbus landed in the New World. Travel through CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK, climb 1,500-foot capes, skirt rugged coastal headlands, and pass through villages where ancient dialects can still be heard. Before leaving the Cabot Trail, stop at the Acadian fishing village of Cheticamp.
Day 5:Sun. BADDECK–CHARLOTTETOWN. Head back to the peninsula and continue north to Caribou, where a ferry whisks you across NORTHUMBERLAND STRAIT to Prince Edward Island. For the next two nights, you are in Charlottetown, the provincial capital. A late-afternoon arrival allows you to see more of this colonial town and its restored waterfront.
Day 6:Mon. CHARLOTTETOWN. Begin the day with guided sightseeing that includes the coastal route through PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND NATIONAL PARK. View sand dunes, salt marshes, freshwater ponds, and some of the finest beaches in eastern Canada. Visit the ANNE OF GREEN GABLES FARMHOUSE, setting of Lucy Maude Montgomery’s famous novel. This evening, consider an optional outing to the Charlottetown Festival and the world-famous stage performance of Anne of Green Gables (performance is available during July, August, and September).
Day 7:Tue. CHARLOTTETOWN–MONCTON. This morning, enjoy a private performance at THE COLLEGE OF PIPING. Enjoy a sampling of four core disciplines: Highland bagpiping, Scottish-style snare drumming, Highland dancing, and Prince Edward Island step-dancing. Afterward, visit the interpretive display and learn more about Prince Edward Island’s Celtic culture. Afterward, cross the 8-mile-long Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick. Stop at OLIVIER SOAPERY for a guided tour and to learn about the art of soap crafting. Tonight it’s the ultimate lobster experience on an optional lobster cruise, where you haul in a lobster trap, learn cooking techniques, observe a cracking demonstration, and savor a complete lobster dinner on board your sailing vessel.
Day 8:Wed. MONCTON–MIRAMICHI. The day begins with a stop at the La Dune de Bouctouche Eco-Centre, developed to preserve one of the few remaining great sand dunes in North America. The white sand dune stretches more than 7 miles across Bouctouche Bay and has remained virtually unchanged since the glaciers melted. It is a haven for wildlife and there is a mile-long boardwalk that winds across the dune where visitors can observe the wildlife without encroaching on this sensitive area. Our journey continues to Miramichi, situated along the world-famous salmon-angling river. Upon arrival, enjoy time on your own at Ritchie Wharf Park, themed after a once-thriving shipbuilding industry. Don’t miss the boardwalk with shops, artists’ gallery, and restaurants. Tonight, join the evening optional and experience a true Miramichi tradition—an interactive evening of entertainment in a down-home kitchen atmosphere. Bring your dancing shoes if you like or just clap your hands and stomp your feet to the lively music.
Day 9:Thu. MIRAMICHI–FREDERICTON. Today we make our way to Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city. Enjoy a highlight tour that includes the Christ Church Cathedral and the Historic Garrison District. Continue to the St. John River Valley and KINGS LANDING HISTORICAL SETTLEMENT. Disembark to find yourself back in time at a loyalist village complete with creaking wagons pulled by workhorses, the whooshing of hoop skirts, and melodies from fiddlers, along with breathtaking views of the St. John River. Overnight in Fredericton.
Day 10:Fri. FREDERICTON–ST. ANDREWS–SAINT JOHN. This morning, travel to the resort town of St. Andrews by-the-Sea for included WHALE WATCHING. Cruise past rugged seascapes and lighthouses for a true adventure. Stroll and explore the unique shops that line Water Street before following the beautiful Fundy Coast to Saint John, the Fundy City. Your time in Saint John is free for independent sightseeing. May we suggest visiting the Old City Market for a unique shopping experience? Nowhere else in Saint John can you experience a traditional “farmers market” while shopping for such a wide selection of goods and services. The market is alive with the aroma of fresh food and the colorful displays of produce, meats, and seafood. Browse for Maritime crafts, imported items, and items handcrafted by the City Market’s own resident artists.
NOTE: Several factors influence a successful whale-watching and wildlife excursion—Mother Nature does not keep a schedule. Therefore, we cannot guarantee sightings at any time.
Day 11:Sat. SAINT JOHN–HOPEWELL ROCKS–HALIFAX. Make a stop at THE HOPEWELL ROCKS and learn about the highest and wildest tides in the world, which rise and fall up to 52 feet. Time and tide have carved from the cliffs and coves distinctive sandstone formations topped with trees. Many of the formations have nicknames inspired by their appearance. Look for Lover’s Arch, Dinosaur Rock, Mother-in-law, and ET, just to name a few. An evening arrival into the modern port of Halifax, capital of Nova Scotia.
Day 12:Sun. HALIFAX. PEGGY’S COVE EXCURSION. Travel to one of the most photographed locations in Canada—PEGGY’S COVE. Mail a postcard from the only lighthouse in North America with a post office! Explore the cove and allow this picturesque area to enchant you with its beauty, mystery, and charm. Before our return to Halifax, stop in Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to Nova Scotia’s largest fishing fleet, extraordinary architecture, supreme shops, and more. While there, take a self-guided walking tour of the town and visit the Fisheries Museum. The evening is at leisure for last-minute shopping or a walk along the harbor.
Day 13:Mon. HALIFAX–OCEAN TRAIN. This afternoon, board VIA Rail’s Ocean train. Travel while sleeping in comfort and awaken in a different region of Canada! Ride across New Brunswick to Québec’s largest city, Montréal. Accommodation on the train is in private double bedrooms. (D)
